The Quest Begins

On Monday, the Lourdes Eagles baseball team officially began the 2011 season. Around 45 players in grades 9-12 gathered in the bubble on the campus of Rochester Community & Technical College for the first practice.

The opening practice marks the beginning of a hectic spring season, which lasts barely eight weeks. The Eagles first game is less than three weeks away, April 8. The weather, of course, is always a factor.

As always, all within the program are looking forward to a fun season. Go Eagles!

Bat Information (Important!)

Beginning next spring (2012), all baseball bats used in Minnesota State High School League play must meet the BBCOR (Bat Ball Coefficient Of Restitution) standard. In order to be eligible for use in league contests, a bat must have this symbol on it. Again, that starts next spring.

This spring there have been some rule changes regarding bats, specifically composite bats. There is more information about what bats are eligible at the State High School League website. Check out the list of composite bats that will be legal this spring, and the list of illegal composite bats.

So please keep this in mind if you or your son plans to buy a new bat soon. It would be wise to buy one with the BBCOR symbol. Any bat without that symbol will be illegal in 2012. In other words, BESR-certified (Ball Exit Speed Ratio) bats will not be allowed.

Special treat for a baseball fan

If you're a Twins fan, then the

thought of visiting Yankee Stadium might leave you feeling somewhat nauseated. But if you're a baseball fan, then you'll quickly get past that (sort of). It is a neat place in a neat city. Even though the Yankees have played only two seasons in the new stadium, it is nice blend of young and old. Someday I hope to see a baseball game there.

How many of you knew Yogi Berra's given name? I had no idea.
