The Quest Begins

On Monday, the Lourdes Eagles baseball team officially began the 2011 season. Around 45 players in grades 9-12 gathered in the bubble on the campus of Rochester Community & Technical College for the first practice.

The opening practice marks the beginning of a hectic spring season, which lasts barely eight weeks. The Eagles first game is less than three weeks away, April 8. The weather, of course, is always a factor.

As always, all within the program are looking forward to a fun season. Go Eagles!

Bat Information (Important!)

Beginning next spring (2012), all baseball bats used in Minnesota State High School League play must meet the BBCOR (Bat Ball Coefficient Of Restitution) standard. In order to be eligible for use in league contests, a bat must have this symbol on it. Again, that starts next spring.

This spring there have been some rule changes regarding bats, specifically composite bats. There is more information about what bats are eligible at the State High School League website. Check out the list of composite bats that will be legal this spring, and the list of illegal composite bats.

So please keep this in mind if you or your son plans to buy a new bat soon. It would be wise to buy one with the BBCOR symbol. Any bat without that symbol will be illegal in 2012. In other words, BESR-certified (Ball Exit Speed Ratio) bats will not be allowed.

If you're a Twins fan, then the

thought of visiting Yankee Stadium might leave you feeling somewhat nauseated. But if you're a baseball fan, then you'll quickly get past that (sort of). It is a neat place in a neat city. Even though the Yankees have played only two seasons in the new stadium, it is nice blend of young and old. Someday I hope to see a baseball game there.

This week has been great at Vero Beach! It's been great being with the kids and getting to know them. The baseball has been great and the time invaluable. We accomplished a great amount in a short amount of time.

We've learned a lot about the squads and have been able to see how things fit. Our HVL schedule starts quickly and our real baseball games start!

Big thanks goes out to my coaches here: Coaches Hudson, Hohberger, and Jenson. I really could get used to having this type of staff for every practice and game situation. We are really lucky having this quality of baseball knowledge working with our kids. These guys have been so dedicated to our baseball program and very passionate about baseball. My hope is the kids got as much quality time from these wonderful baseball guys as I did.

Happy Easter and hope all goes as well for us as they did here!

The Lourdes Eagles wrapped up the baseball portion of their 2010 Spring Training trip on Wednesday with three practice contests. It was an endurance test as the simulations were back-to-back-to-back, but the boys persevered. Today we co-oped practices with two teams from Ohio and one from Illinois.

Contest one saw Tom Schroeder, Mark Greve and Zach Muehlenbein eat up some innings on the mound. Muehlenbein then started contest two. Jesse Neumann and Nick Schoeberl then combined to finish up pitching. At the plate, Schoeberl had a double. In the third and final contest, played in the big stadium, Chris Griffin added to his league-leading triple total with two more. Griff had 3 RBIs. Tom Schroeder added a two-run single. Tom and Mark Greve also drove in runs with sacrifice flies. Ricky Devorak pitched 5 1/3 sharp innings, then gave way to David Keeney who retired the final two batters.

With our remaining hours in Florida the boys have decided they would like to visit the beach one more time. It will be a very early wake-up Thursday morning, as we have to be to the airport in West Palm Beach by about 7 am. Dodgertown was a neat experience but we're ready to come home.

Great day of baseball today for the Eagles. 3 scrimmages, 1 in old Dodger spring training stadium! We played a good first contest against a team from Georgia. They had a large amount of left handed pitchers. It felt great to be scrimmaging in such a wonderful atmosphere. Good pitching and some decent at bats for SO early in the year for our kids. Very proud of the kids.

Scrimmage 2 had good outings on the mound from Tom Schroeder, Zach Muehlenbein, Chris Griffin, and Nick Schoeberl. Our bats were extremely quiet considering how much cage time we've spent the last 2 days! Pitching I guess is always better earlier than hitting.

We had a great comeback in scrimmage 3 today scoring runs late. Had a number of kids find the injury bug in scrimmage 3. Hopefully we'll rebound for our 3 scrimmages tomorrow. Pitchers may be interesting tomorrow as we piece it together.

We have 3 scrimmages tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. After that, we'll end up with some last fun in the sun and get back to Minnesota on Thursday.

The sky was blue, the grass was green, the sun was bright and the breeze was light. It doesn't get much better than this. I really feel bad for those of you stuck back in Minnesota. What ... it was 70 degrees and sunny in Rochester today? Oh... Well it was still warmer than that here in Florida.

The Lourdes Eagles hit the field Tuesday for some cooperative practices with some different teams. Three to be exact - one team from Georgia, one from Pennsylvania, and one from Kentucky. I think a couple of the boys have actually picked up a little southern drawl.

In the first session, played in the big stadium, Ricky Devorak looked sharp in his mound work. Chris Griffin whacked a long triple in the left-centerfield alley. Mark Greve pitched one inning as a closer. Geoff Nichols also smacked a single to leftfield.

The Eagles' second session included some nice defense. At third, Ricky Devorak dove to his left to snag a hot shot then threw the runner out at first. David Keeney, patrolling centerfield, made several nice plays on fly balls and line drives. Tom Schroeder, Chris Griffin, Zach Muehlenbein and Nick Schoeberl all saw time on the mound.

The third and final session of the day featured some solid hitting. Sam Sloan and Joe Fritzjunker each knocked out two sharp singles.

Best sunburn so far: Coach Herold (you can almost see the heat radiating off his neck).

A close second: David Stenzel (I believe his exact words were, "The sun destroyed me today.")

We'll call it an 'Off Day'

Unfortunately no real baseball activities Monday. We just weren't quite able to work out the logistics for a possible co-op practice with another team near Orlando. We do have some more batting practice scheduled for this evening after dinner. Currently the team is at the beach. Dean Schoeberl and the travel committee was gracious enough to transport the kids for some time in the surf.

The rain has stopped, it is a little brighter, and the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday is very encouraging. Thus far the boys have kept a positive outlook.

Mother Nature intervened

The Vero Beach area was hit with a storm Sunday evening into Monday morning, including 2-3 inches of rain. Coach Herold got the call on the way to breakfast Monday morning that all baseball activities at Dodgertown had been canceled. They are, however, trying to make other arrangements for us to get some baseball in near Orlando. We're still waiting for the final go-ahead, but we have Dean Schoeberl and the transportation committee on stand-by.

The team did, however, get to take some batting practice Sunday evening at the indoor hitting facility. They're working hard but looking forward to getting on the diamond for some game simulations.

In case you were wondering, coaches did conduct a bedcheck on Sunday night and all the beds are accounted for.

Day Trip

After Palm Sunday liturgy at St. Helen's Church in Vero Beach and lunch at the dining room, we loaded up the caravan and drove about 30 miles south to Port St. Lucie. There we watched a spring training game between the Mets and Cardinals.

We sat on the grassy berm beyond the outfield fence and watched as the Great Pujols went 3-for-4 with a HR. The Cardinals won 10-5.

As our Florida squad begins its first baseball activities of the trip, I am reminded of my seemingly distant playing days in spring training myself. What a great opportunity for these players; enjoying the sun, warm weather, camaraderie, and of course, playing outdoor baseball! The complex here at Dodgertown is quite the facility. Breakfast was very satisfying, and the green grass is such a beautiful sight to behold on the many fields. I wish my squad was down here too! I guess I'll just have to make due working with the players that are here, enjoying every minute of it ;)

The rooms here are nice, much like a standard hotel room. The Dodgers trained here for many years up until this season. They now train in Arizona.

Just think of the legends who may have slept in this room during Dodgers spring training: Roy Campenella, Sandy Koufax, Fernando Valenzuela, Gil Hodges, Duke Snider, Steve Sax, Hideo Nomo, Tommy Lasorda.

Hello to everyone in Rochester.

The Lourdes Eagles baseball spring training trip 2010 arrived at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Fla., late Saturday night (actually early Sunday morning). Our flights were smooth and pretty much on time. There were no problems checking in and clearing security at MSP. Thankfully no one in our party was on any FBI watch lists.

Our flight from Atlanta to West Palm Beach was overbooked, so the airline was offering two free round-trip tickets to any of its destinations (including Montego Bay) to any volunteer willing to give up his or her seat. Coach Herold looked tempted, but someone else beat him to it so he was stuck with us.

We landed in West Palm Beach shortly before 11 pm eastern time. No major snafus with the rental cars, and the almost-90 minute drive to Vero Beach was smooth. Check-in was easy at Dodgertown, and the boys were in their rooms by 2 am.

On Friday, March 26, sophomores may join the varsity in their workout. Right now that is scheduled for 5 pm at Silver Lake. I will post immediately if I find that has changed.

Next week Coach Todd will conduct workouts for any players (grades 9-12) who are available. Those will be Tuesday (March 30) and Thursday (April 1), beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Silver Lake. Coach Hohberger will also hold a workout on Friday (April 2) around 11 or 11:30 a.m. The site has yet to be determined. Again, these workouts for any players who might to throw a little bit or take some swings.

Harry Kalas, longtime voice of the Philadelphia Phillies, died Monday in Washington D.C. He was 73.

My grandparents lived in Pennsylvania so I have a few memories of watching the Phillies and hearing his famous call, "That ball is outta here."

Actually, I didn't even ask. Mr. Peters sent me a not this morning that Hayfield was looking for a B-team to round out a four-team tournament. I said let's do it, and a little bit later Mr. Peters notified me we are in. So adjust your schedules: Saturday, May 16, we travel to Hayfield.

Not sure how the tournament works, but I assume it will be at least two games. Other teams there will be Hayfield, Triton and Blooming Prairie.

Those will be our final games of the season.

Goodhue game off

I got word today that our April 13 game at Goodhue is canceled; Goodhue will not have a B-team this season.

This may be a bit of a blessing as we were scheduled for five games that week. As it stands now, we have four: April 14 at Hayfield; April 16 DH at Kasson; April 17 La Crescent.

Don't know yet on the possibility of picking up a game to replace Goodhue.

Greatest baseball movie ever

During the first week of practice I asked the players to fill out a brief questionnaire just so I could learn a little more about each of them. One of the questions I asked: What is the greatest baseball movie ever?

Much to my chagrin, only two young men answered correctly — 'Field of Dreams.' Most of them answered with 'The Sandlot,' which is a good movie. But 'Field of Dreams' is in a class by itself. One young man said 'Fever Pitch,' and another answered 'Mr. 3,000.' Right then I knew I had my work cut out for me.
